WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY
“DONATE BLOOD, SAVE LIFE”
Blood is one of the important constituent of human body. To make people aware of importance of blood donation, world health organization has established an event in the year 2004. Every year on 14 June countries around the world celebrate world blood donor day. This event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life saving gifts of blood.
World blood donor day celebration brings a precious opportunity to all donors for celebrating it on national and global level as well as to commemorate the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner a great scientist who won the noble prize for his great discovery of the ABO blood group system
World blood donor day is one of the eight official global health campaigns marked by world health organization. Transformation of blood and blood products helps and save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life threatening conditions live longer and with high quality of life and support complex medical and surgical procedure. It also has an essential life saving role in maternal and prenatal care.
The world need enough safe blood for everyone in need every few seconds someone, somewhere need blood. Regular blood donations are needed all over the world to ensure individuals and communities have access to safe and quality assured blood and blood products. According to world health organization only 62 countries are getting sufficient blood supplies whereas 40 countries are still dependent for the blood donations on patient’s family members or paid donors. In many countries like India, it is challenging for blood services to make sufficient blood and blood products available while also ensuring its quality and safety. Access to safe blood and blood products is essential for universal health coverage and a key component of effective health, Thalassemia an inherited blood disorder the treatment of which require regular blood transfusion. Voluntary blood donations can save lives of many Thalassemia patients across the world.
It’s a competitive world today; a human has various tasks, targets and goals. For competing all these, a human must stay healthy, for being healthy a human body needs healthy blood. Every blood is gift to life. The best way to celebrate this day is to go out and donate blood which will surely help someone.
